October checkpoints: PSAT, college apps, and the first report card
Fall testing dates, UT Early Action, Free College Application Week, and AISD's first grading window for Austin parents.
Hello from Austin,
This briefing covers three October checkpoints for Austin families: AISD's PSAT window and nearby SAT/ACT dates, UT Early Action plus Texas Free College Application Week, and the first report-card window with parent conferences on October 12.

Fall testing: AISD's PSAT window and nearby SAT/ACT dates
Austin ISD's 2026-27 testing calendar lists a PSAT window from October 1 to October 30. Contact your campus for the exact day. Sophomores and juniors are often registered through school.
National weekend dates on that same AISD calendar include:
- ACT: September 19, 2026
- SAT: October 3, 2026
- ACT: October 17, 2026
- SAT: November 7, 2026
For the October 3 SAT, College Board's registration deadline is September 18, 2026, and the late registration deadline is September 22, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET).
UT Austin requires at least one official SAT or ACT score sent from the testing agency for freshman admission (SAT code 6882, ACT code 4240).
Why it matters for your student
School-day PSAT is easy to treat as routine. For many juniors it is also the National Merit path. For seniors who still need a score for early applications, the October and November weekends are the practical windows left before UT Early Action materials close.
If your student needs focused reading or math prep before those dates, that is a better use of the calendar than a generic "study more" plan. Official free practice is available through College Board and Khan Academy; a local mentor is optional when the evenings need structure.

Seniors: UT Early Action and Free College Application Week
For summer/fall freshman enrollment, UT Austin Early Action is due October 15. Supplemental materials for Early Action are due October 22. The regular application deadline is December 1 (supplements December 10). Early Action decisions (or deferral notices) are released by January 15, 2027.
Texas Free College Application Week runs October 12 to October 18, 2026. Under Senate Bill 2231, Texas public colleges and universities must waive ApplyTexas undergraduate application fees for Texas residents who submit during that week (12:00 a.m. CDT October 12 through 11:59 p.m. CDT October 18). The waiver covers undergraduate applications only, including transfer applicants who are Texas residents. It does not cover graduate applications, and international students who are not Texas residents are not included.
If your student has dual-credit coursework, request college transcripts early. UT asks for official college transcripts for college credit earned in high school.
Why it matters for your student
Missing Early Action or Free College Application Week is mostly a calendar problem, not a talent problem. Essays, scores, fee timing, and dual-credit paperwork stack in the same three weeks as homework. Put the deadlines on the fridge now, and treat ApplyTexas submission during October 12-18 as the default for Texas public options when a fee would otherwise apply.

First nine weeks: report cards and October 12 conferences
On the AISD 2026-27 calendar, the first grading period ends October 8. October 12 is Indigenous Peoples' Day and a student holiday with elementary and secondary parent conferences.
That is the first formal grade picture since classes started August 18. Under district grading policy, AISD uses nine-week report cards to report progress.
Why it matters for your student
Conferences go better when you already know which class is heavy, which teacher notes keep repeating, and whether homework time has ballooned since August. If a subject is already a nightly fight, you do not need to wait for the printed report card to ask for help. Bring specific examples to October 12: missing assignments, quiz patterns, time spent, and what you have already tried at home.
